Dear Rooter,

Please visit our site to look over the selection of materials that we
have there. There are several books that come to mind...1-800-MESORAH
sells a wonderful HISTORY OF THE JEWISH PEOPLE that we list in our
catalog. I do not have any in stock at the moment and feel that you want
your books NOW, so you may call them to place your order. There are 2
volumes to the series, but they are the finest history books that I have
ever seen. It is written by the orthodox, and is written very user
friendly.

Another wonderful NEW source that we haven't told the group about
yet---but will shortly---is the series THAT THE WORLD MAY KNOW video set
from Focus on the Family. This series is done by a high school history
teacher in conjunction with FOCUS. This is available from us also. I
just haven't had time to make the announcement to the group. Our own
Rabbi Othniel (its so wonderful having them here with us!) is planning
on using the series as an alternative mixed in with Dr. Ron Moseley's
courses. Dr. Ron's classes earn college credit from Arkansas Institute
of Holy Land Studies out of Little Rock (see
http://www.haydid.org/ark.htm), and this video series (available with
teacher's guide, maps, large drawings, etc...) will provide a good
beginning for those not willing or quite ready to take a college class.

Dr. Ron's school is EXCELLENT for the serious student. It is a specialty
college where you may earn a bachelor's or master's degree in Middle
Eastern History. Eddie, Rabbi O, Randy Felton, Tom and I will be there
in Little Rock next week for the conference and will also get to
experience their graduation ceremony with others from this newsgroup.

It is our desire to provide educational alternatives to the traditional
education of both the Jew and the non-Jew. We are educators---not a
denomination. It is our desire to present information in a variety of
methods that will enhance your walk as a believer. Please remember that
we encourage you to study the Jewishness of the Gospel for that reason,
and not to convert you to Judaism of today. The Judaism of today is NOT
that of 2000 years ago. It has "evolved" into a different
religion---just as Christianity has "evolved" into something that it
didn't start out with. If you haven't read OUR FATHER ABRAHAM, then that
is my FIRST recommendation of a primer! Understanding where we missed
it, and then putting into proper perspective the pieces of the puzzle
will allow you to study with balance.

Just remember that a baby can't chew down on meat. He has to start wtih
that first step. OUR FATHER ABRAHAM should be every persons first study
of where we are headed. THEN call Dr. Ron in Little Rock at
1-800-617-6205 and sign up today for your studies! He has created a
curriculum that every person in this newsgroup can trust and follow. The
price is right, and you can take it right there in your own home.

Shalom,
Cheryle Holeman

Dear group:

I want to "second" the recommendation of the video series "That the World
May Know". I was asked to teach a Sunday school class to my church this
summer using this video series as a focus, and it has been great.

The teacher is a guy named Ray Vander Laan, and he has a great way of
telling a story. He put a whole lot of work into this very well done
series of video cassettes.

The scenes were filmed as he took a group around to various sights in
Israel and told of their history and significance in scripture as well as
some guidelines for applying those lessons today. Each set comes with a
rather substantial book which includes lesson plans, reference material,
and additional articles. (No, I'm not selling these tapes, but it is
really cool to see all of these places!)

Personally, I was a bit concerned about how well my own interest in the
Hebrew roots of the Bible would be accepted by a whole congregation - many
of whom are over 65 (I'm just 33). What I found, though, was that when you
can actually see the areas and have a skilled orator (that would be Mr.
Vander Laan - not me) explain how the culture and teachings of this land
are all an important part of God's message, people are very interested and
receptive.

Besides that, to most of us, the Hebraic roots of our faith are new (and
let's face it, how many times have we all endured the countless repetitive
and esoteric lessons on the topics of "grace" and "faith".) What we all
need, want and often times don't get is the kind of sold background to
fully understand these principles.

Religion today has become sort of like modern day art classes. It used to
be that the art teacher would stress learning the fundamentals. A student
was taught to draw still life - first a single item, then multiple items,
then items of varying textures. Then, once these had been mastered, the
student would begin on the human form - first a portion - like a finger,
then a hand, a foot, from there to more difficult areas like the eyes and
ears, until finally the whole form. It was only then that the student had
the necessary skills to experiment with newer ways of expression. Today,
children are taught that anything they put on paper is "art". They are
encouraged to produce "modern art" when they don't even have the skills to
convey depth or texture. Consequently, much of the art that is turned out
today ... well, it stinks!

Religion should be more like the traditional artist of this analogy. We
should learn the very basics of our beliefs - including its history. This
takes years of study, but in so doing we can all learn to REALLY understand
such concepts as "grace" and "faith" without resorting to the mimicking of
trite plattitudes which not only don't enlighten but serve to turn people
away from the Church.

That is why I like this news group and all of the people in it. You all
have taken - and are taking - the time to become "artists" - to truly gain
in knowledge, skill and understanding. Like any good artist it will be a
life-long endeavor, for, like the artist who can never achieve a perfect
likeness, we will never achieve perfection in our goals, but in the
struggle create ever more beautiful renditions of God's teachings we
achieve God's purpose for us. In a "fallen" world, that is what God wants
of us, and with the sacrifice of the Christ, it will be enough.

Shalom y'all
