I can't tell much of Jewish tradition, but the very best book I have ever
seen on fasting and relationship to God is, A Hunger For God by John
Piper. I personally guarentee this book will bring tears, conviction,
fuller love of God, and if practiced a deeper relationship witht he Lord.
Sub title is...Desiring God Through Fasting and Prayer.

Shalom.....
