We are in the Jewish year 5757 but check with a computer program called ITIM
from Davka. The response with this and many other theories is that aporx 240
years were not calculated during captivity. There fore we must add 240 or
thereabouts to 5757.

The calculation isn't based on one Rabbis opinion. It is a concensus
based upon many factors, Bible verses and Talmudic sources, most
notably in the tractate Seder HaOlam. The Talmud calculated the time
span between the destruction of the first Temple and the destruction
of the second Temple incorrectly at 490 years, based upon Daniels
Prophecy. However, the secular span is correct, and the Rabbis know
it, only they don't want to make an "offical" annoucement because it
will disturb the status quo. The extra 166 years along with an
additional 75 years that have be misplaced because of failing to take
into account the overlaping of the kings reigning periods, totals 241
years. Add this to our current Jewish year of 5757 and you get 5998,
the true Jewish year. And since the Rabbis know that the Messiah must
come in the year 6001 (the seventh day), it seems to fit their own
observations that "Biyat HaMashiach" the coming of the Messiah, is
right around the corner.

I read this past spring an excellent book entitled "Signs in the
Heavens" by Avi Ben Mordecai, a messianic Jew. In it, he has a
section which shows in detail the number of years from creation to the
birth of Messiah, according to the Tanakh. There are also a number of
other interesting facts, such as the timing of Messiah's death, which
just happened to coincide with the year that the red cloth stopped
turning white on Yom Kippur, a sign that God had already accepted the
blood of Messiah for redemption from sins.
I also highly recommend this book for its insight into Jewish
messianic thought in the two centuries preceding Messiah's birth. I
don't have the exact address, but Avi Ben Mordecai's organization is
called Millenium 7000, and is based in Colorado Springs, CO. Shalom,
everyone. The Lord is coming soon!
