INTER-RELIGIOUS ASSEMBLY SET FOR ROME IN OCTOBER 1999
VATICAN CITY, FEB 28, 1998 (Vatican Informatin Service)

A communique released today by the Pontifical Council for
Inter-religious Dialogue announced that "during the second half
of October 1999, an inter-religious assembly will be held in
Rome, and will have as its theme "On the Threshold of the Third
Millennium: Collaboration among Diverse Religions."

"In 'Tertio Millennio Adveniente'," begins the communique, "the
Holy Father indicated 1999 as a year to be dedicated, among other
things, to an encounter with other religions. It is in this sense
that, within the various initiatives aimed at celebrating the Jubilee
of the Year 2000, the Committee of the Presidency of the Great Jubilee
of 2000 charged the Pontifical Council for Inter-religious Dialogue
with organizing an inter-religious assembly."

After announcing the October 1999 meeting, the note adds: "The
meeting will take place in diverse moments: there will be plenary
sessions, work groups, a day for a pilgrimage, probably to Assisi, and
a concluding day of prayer which will include fasting, prayers in
different places for different religions and a concluding ceremony in
St. Peter's Square in the presence of the Holy Father."

VATICAN PRESENTS GUIDELINES ON CHRISTIAN UNITY TRAINING
March 9, 1998 Vatican City (AP)

The Vatican released a detailed teaching plan Monday to instill
the spirit of Christian unity in seminarians. The guidelines,
aimed also at Catholic schools and universities, are another sign of
Pope John Paul II's emphasis on the ecumenical movement the effort
to bring closer Christianity's different branches.

The effort is considered especially important in Eastern Europe,
where the church has clashed with the Orthodox church over Roman
Catholic efforts to win followers. Catholics also compete for
followers with Protestant groups in Latin America and Africa.

"We would like to see our future seminarians ... know exactly
what ecumenism is, and how it should be taught,'' Cardinal Edward
Idris Cassidy told reporters. Cassidy heads the Vatican's Pontifical
Council for the Promotion of Christian Unity, which published the
32-page document in four languages. He warned that Catholics seeking
closer ties with other Christians should not forget "the requirements
of revealed truth'' of their faith or ignore Catholic Church norms.

The document, "The Ecumenical Dimension in the Formation of Those
Engaged in Pastoral Work,'' said the idea of Christian unity should be
instilled in all areas of priestly formation. The booklet provides
general information about the Orthodox and Protestant churches and
recommends visits to those churches and common prayer and study
sessions.
