There are two papers that deal directly with these issues.  The first deals
with understanding the differences between the Matthew and Luke genealogies
and the second deals with the problem of a virgin passing the inheritance.
You can find them at:

I learned from the Institute of Jewish-Christian Studies (Zola Levitt
Ministries) that there is no discrepancies in the LINEAGE of YESHUA in
the Gospel.

This is what I learned and it makes perfect since (from the teacher
Jeffrey Seiff):

The Gospel according to Matthew was showing that YESHUA was the 14
GENERATION of King David.  This is prophecy and being POINTED OUT in
Truth that this is the MESSIAH!  As Jeffrey Seiff pointed out in the
New Testament survey Matthews THEME was "REPENT FOR THE KINGDOM OF GOD
IS AT HAND".

The Gospel according to LUKE was pinpointing Him as the PERFECT MAN.
Luke is merely showing LINEAGE all the way to ADAM.

The Gospel according to JOHN was SHOWING HIM AS DIVINE, showing Him as
God in the FLESH.

I am not a TEACHER but I really recommend that you order the New
Testament Survey it really has blessed me in UNDERSTANDING.

I could name CERTAIN RELATIVES in my family TREE to show a SPECIFIC
relation to someone and to another I may show more NAMES to show or
reveal we are related. THAT IS WHAT I SEE IN EACH WRITER making the
RELATIONSHIP known as a FAMILY MEMBER in whoever they relate to in
their LINEAGE.

Shalom

Mary was also from David's line, so Jesus was doubly from it.  Joseph
was his adopted father and hence he could claim that lineage from him
also.  The two geneologies are different as one is Joseph's and the
other is Mary's.

Barry,

Dake's Annotated Reference Bible has some good information concerning
Jesus' bloodline. According to Dake, the genealogy found in Matthew 1
is Joseph's lineage, while the genealogy found in Luke 3 is Mary's.
Dake's argument for this is that in Matthew 1:16, it says that "Jacob
begat Joseph," while in Luke 3:23 it says Joseph was the son (or
son-in-law)of Heli. It does not say he was begotten by Heli, as it
does with Jacob. He points out that women were rarely mentioned in
genealogies, so Joseph, being the legal son of Heli through marriage,
took Mary's place. Either way, both bloodlines go back to David. I
hope this helps.

Shalom Barry.

If you look at the line of the Messiah in Luke 3:23-38 you find that
the father of Miryam (Mary) was Heli. The list is speaking about the
FATHERS of Yeshua. There you can see that from David there is NO KING
until Yeshua, because the line comes through Nathan, the son of David.

So when we speak about Yeshua as the son of David, we are NOT refering
to his "adopted" father Yosephs bloodline, where all the jewish kings
are found, (Matt. 1) but the bloodline through his mother. In most
translations it is difficult to see that Luke is speaking about all
the FATHERS OF YESHUA, including G-d, (v 38). It is NOT Adam who is
son of G-d, but Yeshua.

We have to understand the text in Luke 3:23-38 this way:

"Now Yeshua Himself began (his ministry at) about thirty years of age,
being (as was supposed) son of Joseph, (Yeshua was son) of Heli
(Miryams father), (Yeshua was son) of Mattat, (and son) of Levi....
(and son) of Natan, (and son) of David,... (and son) of Adam, (and
son) of God."
