When Lewis asked about the 'Gospel of Peace'  I thought immediately of
Jesus/Yeshua, anointed to preach the gospel to the poor, sent to heal the
brokenhearted, to preach deliverence to the captives, the recovery of sight to
the blind, and to set at liberty those who are oppressed!

He is our peace, who has broken down every wall - the Repairer of the Breach
between God and man!

Blessed is His Holy name!

Dear Lewis:

In regards to the Gospel of Peace which is the Good News, people do
need to hear if they are to believe.  That means that they need a
messenger.  The fact that we have the Good News, constitutes a divine
commission.  We do not need a special call to fulltime service to be
sent by God, but we  are sent to our neighbors & friends, compelled
simply by knowing the open secret that can transform their lives &
their eternity.

Shalom (peace and well-being)

Paul and other New Testament writers always quoted from the Tanach,
The quotation in this case is from Isaiah 52:7. This verse and it's
context, spells it out clearly and beautifully.

         Jan,

This is correct. In Romans 10:15 it is written:

"And how shall they preach except they be sent? as it is written, How
beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and
bring glad tidings of good things"

This is a quote from Isaiah 52:7 as it is written:

"How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth
good tidings, that publishes peace: that bringeth good tidings of
good, that publishes salvation that saith unto Zion, Thy God
reineth!"

In order to get a better understanding of the "Gospel of
peace", you need to have a Hebraic understanding of the words
translated as "Gospel" and "peace".

The word "good tidings" in Isaiah 52:7 is the Hebrew word,
"basar". It is the Strong's word (1319).

It means:

#1) to bear glad tidings, to announce glad tiding. In II Samuel
       18:19 it is written:

"Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok, let me now run, and bear
the king tidings (1319) how that the Lord has avenged him of his
         enemies"

#2) Announcing victory to a great host. In Psalm 68:11-12 it is written:

"The Lord gave the word: great was the company of that that
published (1319) it. Kings of armies did flee apace: and she that
tarried at home divided the spoil"

#3) A messenger of good news. In Isaiah 40:9 it is written:

"O Zion, that bringeth good tidings (1319) get thee up into the
high mountain, O Jerusalem, that bringest good tidings, lift up thy
voice with strength: lift it up, be not afraid; say unto the cities
       of Judah, Behold your God!"

In the NT, the Hebrew word "basar" (1319) is translated as
"good tidings" and "gospel" and is the Strong's word (2097).

In Luke 2:10-11,  the angel of the Lord announced the
basar / good news that was coming to all people because the Messiah
was being born as it is written:

"And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you
GOOD TIDINGS (2097) = basar in Hebrew --- of great joy which shall be
to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a
Savior, which is Christ the Lord"

In Luke 4:18, this word (2097) that was translated as good
tiding in Luke 2:10 is translated as gospel as it is written:

"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has annointed me to
preach the gospel (2097 / glad tidings / basar) to the poor: he has sent me
to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and
recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are
bruised"

In Luke 4:18, we can see that the basar / glad tidings is
associated with the year of jubilee. The year of jubilee was GOOD
NEWS (glad tidings / basar) to those who need deliverance.

The hebrew word basar / glad tidings / gospel means "good
news".  The greatest of news is to have SHALOM (peace). The Hebrew
word shalom means "whole, complete".  Shalom comes by SHEMA (which
means to hear / do / obey). One who receives the basar / glad tidings
/ good news and shema (hear / obey) will become shalom (whole,
complete).

So, the good news (basar) is to announce, shout, proclaim
shalom (peace). The one who came to bring this peace was the Messiah.
For this reason, He is called the Prince of Shalom (peace) in Isaiah
9:6 as it is written:

"For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the
government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called
Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, the
Prince of SHALOM (peace)"

We have a 20th century Western American Christian
concept of the Gospel to mean, "I am a sinner, Jesus died for my
sins, if I repent of my sins and accept Jesus into my life than I
will go to heaven" and we define THIS as THE Gospel.

While the above statement is a VERY IMPORTANT truth of the
GOOD NEWS (basar / glad tidings) of the work of Messiah to save a
lost and dying world from their sins, the word gospel simply means
"good news or to announce good news" and it encompasses EVERTHING
associated with the full and complete redemptive plan of God.
Redemption brings SHALOM (whole, completeness).

In Galations 3:8, it tells us that glad tidings / good
news / basar was preached to ABRAHAM as it is written:

"And the scripture foreseeing that God would justify the heathen
through faith, preached the gospel unto Abraham, saying, 'In thee
shall all nations be blessed'.

The good news that God promised Abraham was that the covenant
that God made with him, that all nations would be blessed.

The fullness of this good news / glad tidings / basar is the
COMPLETE redemption of BOTH man and earth back to God so that things
will be like they were before the fall of Adam in the garden of Eden.

This is the creation of the new heavens and the new earth
when we will live and dwell with Messiah for all of eternity. This is
the fullness of the promise that God made to Abraham.

The word basar also means "flesh".  In Genesis 2:22-23 it is
written:

"And Adam said, This is now bone of by bones, and flesh (1320 from
1319) of my flesh: she shall be called woman, because she was taken
out of man. Therefore, shall a man leaven his father and his mother,
and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh (1320
from 1319)"

In the ancient days, hunting and finding food for yourself
and your family was a matter of survival and life and death. When you
came back from hunting and reported that you had brought back the
FLESH (1320) of an animal for food, this was GOOD NEWS (1319) that
was brought by the hunter / messenger to his family.

In John 6:53, Yeshua/Jesus said that those who believed
upon him were suppose to EAT of HIS FLESH as it is written:

"Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, Verily, I say unto you, Except ye
eat the FLESH (Strong's 4561 in the Greek = 1320 in Hebrew / basar)
of the son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you"

What does it mean to EAT his FLESH? If you understand
that the Hebrew word for flesh is BASAR and BASAR also means "good
news, the gospel" and the "gospel / basar / glad tidings brings PEACE
(shalom - complete wholeness) to those that BELIEVE and SHEMA (hear /
do) what is proclaimed / announced (1319 / basar)  about the Messiah
and what He says,  then you are EATING OF HIS FLESH. You are
believing the gospel. Eating his flesh = Believing the good news.

In a few verses prior to John 6:53 where Yeshua/Jesus
said that you must eat his flesh, in John 6:47, He says:

"Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that BELIEVES on me has
everlasting life"

So, what is the "gospel of peace" ?? It is believing
the words of the messenger (preacher) who proclaims that good news
(basar / gospel / glad tidings) that Yeshua/Jesus is Messiah and God
has promised to completely redeem both man and the earth back to
God through the redemptive work of the Messiah and by believing the
message proclaimed by this good news (believing in the work of the
Messiah and His words) we will one day be  able to live and dwell in
the presence of Messiah fully redeemed for  all eternity.  This is
the gospel of peace. Now, THAT  is GOOD NEWS !!!!!!!  SHALOM !!!!!!
