Kim,
The Hebrew word for "believe/faith" is Emunah. It is
the
Strong's word 530. In Hebrews 11:1 it is written:
"Now FAITH is the substance of things hoped for, the EVIDENCE of
things NOT SEEN"
From a hebraic perspective, there is no such thing as
"blind
faith". Faith/emunah has EVIDENCE. Faith/emunah is EVIDENCE of
things NOT SEEN (with the natural eyes). Faith/emunah is based upon
HOPE. Biblical hope is based upon what GOD HAS SAID (His Word) in
contrast to natural hope which is based upon our the probability of
something coming to pass based upon our circumstances.
In Romans 4:16-21 it is written:
"... Abraham, who is the father of us all, (As it is written, I have
made thee a father of many nations) before him whom he BELIEVED, even
GOD ... and calls those things which be not (in the natural) as they
they were (according to the promise of God). Who against (natural)
hope believed in hope (the promise of God), that he might become the
father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, So shall
thy seed be. And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own
body now dead, (his natural circumstances) when he was about a
hundred years old, neither the deadness of Sarah's womb (her
circumstances): he staggered not at the PROMISE OF GOD (his EVIDENCE)
through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; and
being FULLY PERSUADED (his evidence) that what he (God) had promised,
he was able also to perform"
Hebrew is the pure language of God
(Zeph 3:9). Most Hebrew
words come from a three letter root. Those words which come from the
root word will often be associated and amplify the understanding of
the root word and the family of words associated with it. Often by
studing the Hebrew root word and the family of words from that word
root you can better understand Biblical truths and revelation of a
concept or principal in God's Word.
Let us see this by examining
the Hebrew word for
believe/faith which is emunah (Strong's word 530).
In Habakkuah 2:4 it is written:
"... but the just shall live by faith (emunah / 530)"
Emunah (530) means:
"security, fidelity, faithful, faithfulness, stability, steady,
truly, truth, verily"
Faith is secure (not blind).
Faith is truth.
Faith is steady / stability.
The three letter root word of believe/faith/emunah is:
Aleph, Mem, Nun
which is the Hebrew word Aman (Strong's 539) which means:
"to build up, to support, to trust, believe, be firm, assurance,
establish, long continuance, stedfast, sure, turn to the right"
Faith is trusting,
Faith is believing.
Faith is assurance (of things hoped for).
Faith is being stedfast (long continuance).
Faith is turning to the right.
Faith is being firm to the truth.
Faith is sure.
In II Corinthians 20:20 it is written:
" ... believe (539) in the Lord your God, so shall ye be established
(539) believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper"
Here the Hebrew word (Aman / Strong's 539) is translated in the verse
(believe) and (established).
Faith is believing.
Faith is being established in what you believe.
In Deuteronomy 7:9 it is written:
"Know therefore that the Lord thy God, he is God, the faithful (539)
God ..."
Faith is being faithful.
The Hebrew word (Amen / 543) means: Amen, or so be it.
It comes from the Hebrew word (aman / 539).
Faith says Amen.
Faith says it will be.
In Psalm 100:5 it is written:
"For the Lord is good, his mercy is everlasting: and his truth
(emunah / faith) endures to all generations"
In this verse, emunah / faith is translated as truth.
So, faith is truth.
So, what does it mean to believe / have faith from a Hebraic
perspective? It means:
trust, believe, be stedfast, endure, have long continuance, be
faithful, be firm, be sure, turn to the right, so be it, amen
We can learn all of these things by studying the meaning of the word
faith / emunah from the Hebrew language. By studying the meaning of
the family of words associated with each Hebrew word, we can often
understand the spiritual meaning and truth of a word or spiritual
principal in God's Word which He wants us to understand. By knowing
that Hebrew is the SPIRITUAL language of God and that the Hebrew
language itself communicates spiritual truth's in God's Word, we can
grow in our knowledge and understanding of God, His ways and His
Kingdom.
