The MessiahNet Daily Devotional is a Scripture-based
devotional, designed to aid believers in their private, daily
devotional time and bring them into a closer walk with the
Lord.  Each devotional contains a daily scripture passage,
devotional writing, and suggested prayer.  All scriptures are
quoted from the highly acclaimed "Complete Jewish Bible",
a modern translation of the Tanakh ("Old Testament")
and the B'rit Hadashah ("New Testament").

Perseverant Trust

All these people kept on trusting until they died, without receiving what
had been promised.  They had only seen it and welcomed it from a distance,
while acknowledging that they were aliens and temporary residents on the
earth.  For people who speak this way make it clear that they are looking
for a fatherland.  Now if they were to keep recalling the one they left,
they would have an opportunity to return; but as it is, they aspire to a
better fatherland, a heavenly one.  This is why God is not ashamed to be
called their God, for he has prepared for them a city.  Messianic Jews
(Hebrews) 11:13-16

The author of the letter to a group of Messianic Jews supports his thesis
that "trusting is: being confident of what we hope for, convinced about
things we do not see (MJ 11:1)" by providing a list of pre-Avrahamic
covenant people from the Torah who trusted God:  Hevel (Abel), Hanokh
(Enoch), Noach (Noah), then Avram and Sarai, themselves.

Then the author makes a most remarkable statement:  "all these people kept
on trusting... *without* receiving what had been promised."  Indeed, by
faith, Avraham had to accept God's promise that "What is called your 'seed'
will be in Yitz'chak (Isaac)," and as the father of multitudes, the
reception of the promise was far off, able to be seen only "from a
distance" -- it was far in the future.  Avraham Avinu models a kind of
faith that the Body of Messiah would do well to emulate today.

How often we try trusting, being confident of and convinced about things
yet to come, and we look heavenward, aspiring "to a better fatherland",
yet, we miss the joining element that actually bridges the faithful to the
promise:  perseverance.  Our faith falls short because we give up too
easily when we don't see the promise coming.  We look for signs that the
promise is on its way, we try to gauge the time frame so that we can pace
ourselves, but all too often, we burn out, having placed our faith in
something that is obviously -- to our natural minds -- not coming to pass.

The truth is, there are no degrees of trust.  You either trust God, or you
don't.  He's either going to do what he promised, or he won't.  He is
either God, or he's not.  Ask yourself this:  Self, if God made a promise
to you, then told you you would not be the recipient of the promise, would
you still *keep on trusting*?  Would you keep on trusting God for something
you will *never* see?  After all, how does the saying go?  *Seeing* is
believing, right?  Ah, but in the kingdom of God, the Scriptures say, "Be
convinced about things you do *not* see!"

Practically speaking, God is The Keeper of promises, and, by faith, you
will be the recipient of more promises than not.  The key is, to live your
life in trust, *as if* you will have to "keep on trusting" until you die,
seeing and welcoming every promise only from a distance.  If God said it,
believe it.  If you don't see it, believe it.  God is not ashamed of you,
*because* you trust -- and for you, he has prepared a city!

P R A Y E R

Abba Father, make me as Avraham, Yitz'chak and Ya'akov; make me as Yosef,
Moshe, and Yehoshua**, show me how to receive your promises based on my
trust in you alone.  Teach me that I can rest on your promises simply
because you made them, and you are The Promise Keeper.  Your word is more
than enough for me.  Thank you, Lord, for the receivers of your promises,
that we will be blessed beyond our understanding, and that even when I
can't see two feet in front of my face, I will keep *running without fear*,
because you are marking my every step.
