1. WORST DAY OF RIOTS IN HEVRON
In Hevron, at least 19 Molotov firebombs were thrown at Beit Hadassah today
in what was called the worst day of violence since the recent wave of
disturbances began last week. The IDF shot at the attackers with rubber
bullets, injuring five of them; our correspondent emphasized that no one
was killed, despite reports to the contrary. One uniformed Palestinian
police officer was among those apprehended by the IDF for throwing stones.
An Israeli automobile was shot at last night near Halhoul, adjacent to
Hevron. One bullet hole was found on the car, and the driver reported that
he heard at least seven shots fired.

2. MORAG HEATS UP AGAIN
In Gush Katif (Gaza Coast), the Arabs continue to protest the construction
of a fence around Morag and the establishment of a monument in memory of
slain IDF soldier Yehuda Levy. The IDF has stated categorically that the
lands in question are under complete Israeli control. The Palestinians
have erected a large tent adjacent to the community of Morag, which they
say they will remove if the IDF removes the monument for Levy. The IDF in
fact covered the monument with a large cloth, which was later removed by
the Jewish residents. Our correspondent Kobi Sela, who accompanied a group
of Knesset Members and Yesha Council representatives on a flight to the
area this afternoon, reported that Arab presence at the protest camp site
is sparse in the mornings, but becomes stronger in the afternoon when
busloads of students and other protesters arrive, led by Palestinian
Authority officials. One Jewish resident said, "The tension is high, and
the army stands by quietly, doing nothing." Yesterday, a resident of Kfar
Avraham shot and wounded an Arab who, together with other rioters,
attempted to overrun his greenhouses.

The MKs arrived exactly at a time when the tensions began to escalate, and
watched as the Arabs threw rocks at Morag residents from a distance of
30-40 meters. Large Israeli security forces stand as a buffer between the
Arabs and the Jews. MK Moshe Peled told Arutz-7, "The Arabs are testing
us, to see our response. They see Gush Katif as our weak point."

O.C. Southern Command Maj.-Gen. Shlomo Yannai forbade the entry of some
fifteen mobile classrooms into the town of Atzmona - for the use of the
school there - for fear it may "anger the Palestinians and cause increased
disturbances." MK Nissim Dahan (Shas) , visiting the area, told Arutz-7
that he was incensed at the development.

3. TENSIONS IN SHECHEM
The students in the yeshiva at Joseph's Tomb in Shechem have not been
permitted to enter the city today - as happened also on Sunday - for fear
that violence may break out. Palestinians placed a siege on the yeshiva
area, and prevented army vehicles from entering or leaving. The yeshiva
students have erected a protest tent at the Elon Moreh junction at the
entrance to Shechem, demanding that the army allow them to enter.

4. ECONOMIC RESOLUTIONS
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, Finance Minister Dan Meridor, and Bank
of Israel Governor Yaakov Frenkel concluded a marathon meeting this
morning, in which they decided a number of economic issues. They agreed to
liberalize the foreign currency regulations, and to cut 600 million shekels
from the national budget. One major point remains in dispute: the system
of the exchange rate for the shekel. The Prime Minister told reporters
that they will attempt to resolve the issue during the course of the day.
The meeting was held in the shadow of hostility between Netanyahu and
Meridor; rumors continue to abound that the Prime Minister is interested in
Meridor leaving his position.

According to the new reforms, there will be an almost totally free market
in foreign currency. Israeli citizens will be able to open accounts abroad
without restrictions. Regarding the budget cut, some coalition MKs have
already expressed opposition thereof.

5. NETANYAHU-SHARON MEETING POSTPONED
As a result of the protracted economic discussions, the Prime Minister has
postponed a meeting that was to have taken place this afternoon in the
community of Peduel, in western Samaria, with Minister of Infrastructures
Ariel Sharon. The visit was apparently connected with the consultations
that Netanyahu and Sharon have been holding over the past two weeks
regarding the permanent-status arrangement. Peduel is the site of a
commanding view of the coastal plane, and to which Sharon often brings
visitors in attempting to prove the justice of his political stance.

6. PA AND IRAQ GETTING ALONG WELL
Arutz-7 has learned that the Palestinian Authority is conducting very close
relations with Saddam Hussein's regime in Iraq. Azzam al-Ahmad,
responsible for the labor portfolio in the PA, told the newspaper Al Fajr
yesterday that relations between Yasser Arafat and Hussein are the closest
they have ever been, and that they both agree that the peace process is
failing. Al-Ahmad also said that the PA is importing oil from Iraq.

7. KNESSET COMMITTEE HEARS CONVERSION LAW OPINIONS
The Knesset Law Committee held a long session today on the topic of the
Conversion Law. Committee Chairman Shaul Yahalom clarified at the
beginning of the meeting that the purpose of today's session was to hear
the opinions of guests of the committee, as opposed to those of the Knesset
Members. Conservative Rabbi Reuven Hammer, Reform Rabbi Jerome Epstein,
other representatives of the Reform and Conservative movements, and
Orthodox Rabbis Chaim Druckman and Shlomo Riskin, appeared before the
committee.
