FEIGLIN AND SACKETT CONVICTED OF SEDITION 2. PM LASHES OUT AT RAJUB 3. SHARANSKY LAUDS PM'S AZZAM ACTS "SO FAR" 4. TECHNICAL DELAY IN HAR HOMA CONSTRUCTION 5. 700 IMMIGRANTS ARRIVE TODAY 1. FEIGLIN AND SACKETT CONVICTED OF SEDITION The Jerusalem Magistrates Court convicted Zo Artzeinu leaders Moshe Feiglin and Shmuel Sackett this afternoon on charges of sedition. The two were acquitted on eight other charges. The charges related to actions taken by the defendants during and against the Rabin government, chiefly in their organization of thousands of demonstrators in blocking main intersections throughout the country. This was the first time that citizens have been charged on sedition of a political nature. Justice Amnon Cohen, reading the verdict today, said, "Although this is not directly related to the charges presently before us, it must be pointed out that a grim picture of police behavior has been painted [during the trial]." He said that certain violent actions of certain policemen contributed to the heating up of the situation, and were harmful to innocent citizens who simply wished to express their opinion. Sentencing will be handed down at a later date. Before the decision was announced, Moshe Feiglin told Arutz-7 that he is willing to be punished for what he did - "simple civil disobedience," in his words - but he is interested to see if the Histadrut heads will be brought to trial on charges of sedition for blocking the intersections during their current struggle. 2. PM LASHES OUT AT RAJUB Prime Minister Netanyahu says that Jibril Rajub is a "partner in the struggle for the destruction of Israel." This follows the recent remarks of Rajub, head of the Palestinian security bodies, that he feels that he is a "partner in the struggle of the Islamic Jihad and Hamas." Netanyahu further said that the steps taken by the Palestinian Authority are exactly the opposite of what is required. "The PA is not standing firm in the physical war against the terrorists' infrastructure, nor in the educational and propaganda struggle against them," he said. A delegation of senior figures of the Foreign Ministry and the Prime Minister's Office departs today for Washington to prepare the visit of U.S. Secretary of State Albright to the Middle East. She will arrive in the region next week. Head of the Palestinian negotiating team Saeb Erekat denied that the PA is not cooperating on security issues with Israel, and said, "the ball is in the Israeli court. Albright's visit must concentrate on stopping the settlements." Prime Minister Netanyahu announced several days ago that the visit will concentrate on ensuring Palestinian cooperation on issues of security. 3. SHARANSKY LAUDS PM'S AZZAM ACTS "SO FAR" Egyptian Ambassador to Israel Muhammad Basyouni was called to the Prime Minister for a talk today. Mr. Netanyahu transmitted to the Ambassador the Israeli demand to free Azzam Azzam from prison. Minister of Industry and Trade Natan Sharansky said that economic pressure must be placed upon Egypt in order to bring about Azzam's release. He said that if we don't demand a high price from Egypt for what they did regarding Azzam, the Egyptians will hold him ransom and demand an even higher price from us. Sharansky further said that as a former political prisoner himself, he feels obligated to help Azzam. 4. TECHNICAL DELAY IN HAR HOMA CONSTRUCTION Reports that Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu is purposely holding up the announcement of a tender for contractors to build homes in Har Homa have been proven to be unfounded. The tender was to have been publicized some weeks ago, at the conclusion of the preparatory works at the site. However, the Knesset Land of Israel front said that it learned that the delay was caused only by bureaucratic reasons. The Prime Minister's press aide reiterated that there is no intention to give in to American pressures to freeze building in Yesha and in Jerusalem. The MKs of the Land of Israel front had earlier threatened to vote against the government, even at the expense of bringing it down, if the government withdraws from Area C (Israeli) territories within the second withdrawal. 5. 700 IMMIGRANTS ARRIVE TODAY It was a big day for aliyah (immigration) today, as 700 new immigrants from Russia arrived, including a special group of 400 participating in the "First Home in the Homeland" program. The 70 families who arrived today on this Jewish Agency-sponsored program will be hosted during their first few months in various kibbutzim throughout the country. Three major kibbutz movements - Kibbutz HaArtzi, Kibbutz HaDati, and Kibbutz Meuchad - joined together several years ago to participate in hosting new immigrant families. 300 other new olim arrived by ship today at the port of Haifa. ****************************************************************************** From: Arutz-7 Editor <editor7@virtual.co.il> To: arutz-7@ploni.virtual.co.il Subject: Arutz-7 News: Wednesday, September 3, 1997 Arutz Sheva News Service Wednesday, September 3, 1997 / Rosh Chodesh Elul, 5757 ------------------------------------------------ Delivered Daily via Email, Sunday thru Friday ---> See below for subscription instructions <<--- =========<<http://www.a7.org>========== Arutz-7 Israel National Radio - 24 hours a day - on the internet! <www.a7.org> TODAY'S HEADLINES: 1. TWO ISRAELIS SHOT DEAD 2. NE'EMAN ATTACKED FOR BID TO REVAMP RELIGIOUS STRUCTURE 3. ISRAEL OFFERS SWAP FOR AZZAM 4. CALL TO REVOKE PA SENIOR'S VIP STATUS 1. TWO ISRAELIS SHOT DEAD Two Israelis were found killed on the roadside this afternoon at 3:15 PM near Nataf in the area of Maaleh HaHamisha, north-west of Jerusalem in the Jerusalem hills. One man was found shot in his car, and the second was found some meters outside the car. After initial certainty, the police now feel that the shooting was of a criminal, and not terrorist, nature. The police are searching for a taxi that was seen near the scene. 2. NE'EMAN ATTACKED FOR BID TO REVAMP RELIGIOUS STRUCTURE Many MKs of the religious parties are furious over Finance Minister Yaakov Ne'eman's intention to revamp the structure of the Religious Affairs Ministry. Ne'eman announced late yesterday that he proposed to abolish all of the Religious Councils, and replace them with Religious Services departments under the auspices of the municipalities. Ne'eman also plans to transfer responsibility - and government aid - for yeshiva high schools and ulpanot (yeshiva high schools for girls) from the Religious Affairs Ministry to the Education Ministry. Ne'eman also recently announced a plan to draft older yeshiva students for a shortened period of army service, "so as to enable them to legally join the work force." Deputy Religious Affairs Minister Yigal Bibi (NRP) said that if aid to yeshiva high school institutions is cut off, this will increase the already-high tuition costs for yeshiva high school parents by 30%. Deputy Health Minister Shlomo Benizri (Shas) and Deputy Housing Minister Meir Porush (United Torah Judaism) also had strong words of criticism against Ne'eman. Ne'eman himself said that he will not relate to the budget cuts that he wishes to make in the various government ministries before they are discussed in this coming Sunday's Cabinet meeting. MK Rabbi Benny Elon (Moledet), however, called on the religious MKs to support the reforms of Minister Ne'eman, which "are a breakthrough for the entire nation and especially for those who study and love Torah." 3. ISRAEL OFFERS SWAP FOR AZZAM Israel has offered to swap Egyptian prisoners imprisoned in Israel for Azzam Azzam. Prime Minister Netanyahu sent Azzam a hand-written letter encouraging him and promising that Israel would do all it could to ensure that he is released. President Weizmann called Egyptian President Mubarak on the topic, who said that he would first allow the court system to operate before involving other elements. Azzam Azzam was sentenced to fifteen years at hard labor for spying for Israel; Israel has always maintained that Azzam never engaged in espionage. 4. CALL TO REVOKE PA SENIOR'S VIP STATUS The Council of Jordan Valley Communities demands that the Prime Minister revoke the VIP status of Abdul Jawad Salah, Palestinian agriculture administrator. Salah was instrumental in instigating a mob of Palestinian Arabs who entered, and then refused to leave, a Jewish farm near Masuah earlier this week. In a letter to Mr. Netanyahu, Council Chairman David Lahyani wrote that overlooking the actions of Salah could lead to a violent outbreak between Jewish and Arab farmers in the region. *************************************************************************** From: Arutz-7 Editor <editor7@virtual.co.il> To: arutz-7@ploni.virtual.co.il Subject: Arutz-7 News: Thursday, September 4, 1997 Arutz Sheva News Service Thursday, September 4, 1997 / Elul 2, 5757 ------------------------------------------------ Delivered Daily via Email, Sunday thru Friday ---> See below for subscription instructions <<--- =========<<http://www.a7.org>========== Arutz-7 Israel National Radio - 24 hours a day - on the internet! <www.a7.org> TODAY'S HEADLINES: 1. TRIPLE BOMBING IN DOWNTOWN JERUSALEM 2. MEZUZAHS BURNED 3. POLICE TO CONFISCATE WEAPONS OF TWO YESHA RESIDENTS 1. TRIPLE BOMBING IN DOWNTOWN JERUSALEM Three bombs were detonated seconds apart in downtown Jerusalem on Ben Yehuda St. at 3:10 PM this afternoon. The bombs, apparently set off by suicide terrorists, went off in three locations within 100 meters of each other. Some 127 injured had been brought to Jerusalem hospitals within one hour after the blasts. Six deaths have been counted so far, probably including two or three terrorists. Prime Minister Netanyahu canceled a meeting in Tel Aviv, and arrived in Jerusalem upon hearing of the terrorist attack. The Arab terrorist organization Hamas has taken responsibility for the bombing. Updates on the story will be posted on the "Today's News" page of the Arutz Sheva website <wwwa7.org>. 2. MEZUZAHS BURNED Members of the Meretz party youth organization are suspected of burning mezuzah scrolls (ritually placed on doorposts) in Kiryat Gat. The local weekly Kol HaDarom reports in tomorrow's issue that store owners arrived at their stores in the Kiryat Gat mall and found that their mezuzahs had been pulled out of the doorposts. A police investigation later found charred mezuzah fragments near the local Meretz office. Five members of the party were arrested after it was found that they were in fact involved in the crime. Meretz MK Chaim Oron said that this is a "failure" of his party. In other religious tensions in Israel, a kindergarten associated with the Reform movement was burned down earlier this week. Minister of Education Zevulun Hammer condemned the arson, and said he may provide funds for the kindergarten. 3. POLICE TO CONFISCATE WEAPONS OF TWO YESHA RESIDENTS The police have rejected an appeal by two members of Chai Vekayam against the decision to confiscate their weapons. The guns were given them by the army for their personal defense. Yehuda Etzion of Ofrah and Shlomo Neiman of Karmei Tzur near Hevron told our correspondent that they will not return their weapons to the army, even at the cost of imprisonment. They said that their activities on behalf of increasing awareness of the Temple Mount issue are acceptable protests within a democracy, and they never used their weapons for that purpose. Members of Karmei Tzur said that they would turn in their weapons if Neiman's weapon was taken from him. ****************************************************************************** To educate, train and equip for study both the Jew and Non-Jew in the Rich Hebraic Heritage of our Faith.
