1. NEW FAMILIES MAY FACE FORCIBLE EVICTION
Prime Minister Netanyahu has decided "in principle" to forcibly evacuate
the new residents of the Mitzpeh Daniel neighborhood on Mt. of Olives.
Arutz-7 correspondent Chizki Zisman has learned that a senior source in the
Prime Minister's Office phoned settlement leaders and told them that they
should either leave or face being evacuated. Mr. Netanyahu was angered
over the refusal of the new families and of property-owner Dr. Irving
Moskovitz to agree to a compromise solution. He told Dr. Moskovitz's
representative last night that the issue threatens to disrupt an Israeli
political initiative that will enable Israeli to skip the next interim
withdrawal and go straight to a permanent arrangement. Netanyahu is also
concerned that if there is a terrorist attack in the near future, public
opinion in Israel and around the world will attribute it to the new Jewish
presence at Ras el-Amud. Minister of Public Security Avigdor Kahalani said
this morning that intelligence warnings of possible terror attacks had been
received several days before the families moved in to the Mt. of Olives
building.
2. MKs CALL NOT TO EVICT
In response to the reports that the Prime Minister favors evicting the new
residents, MK Chanan Porat (NRP) told Arutz-7, "I simply cannot believe
that the government would evacuate them, for such a government would be
remembered throughout history 'in dreadful disgrace.'" Porat said, "The
timing of the new families' arrival could have been different, but once
Jews have already entered legally, I cannot even conceive that the Prime
Minister would consider taking them out. If he does so, we will see it as
an uprooting of a settlement... Once the government uses the claim of "the
public well-being," then they will be able to do the same thing with entire
settlements. If he evicts them, we and thousands of other families will
be there... I think that the public has entered into a state of national
hysteria, and the Prime Minister must restore the events to their proper
proportion." MK Benny Begin (Likud), in an interview with Arutz-7 today,
agreed that the justification of "the public well-being" to evacuate the
new Mt. of Olives settlers will lead to a never-ending pattern of surrender
to Palestinian threats. Begin called upon the Prime Minister to take
immediate action against the Palestinian headquarters in the adjacent
neighborhood of Abu Dis, where the Palestinian police torture Arabs
suspected of cooperating with Israel.
MK Tzvi Hendel (NRP) said that a government that ignores wholesale illegal
Arab construction in Jerusalem while at the same time mistreating Jews who
enter into legal property transactions cannot be called a 'nationalist
government' and its right to exist is doubtful. He called upon the Prime
Minister to withdraw his involvement from the issue. Minister of National
Infrastructures Ariel Sharon said this morning, "I would suggest to all
those who are dealing with this issue to first of all keep quiet and act
with level-headedness. [They are] giving the impression that Israel is
panicking - every news item dealing with this mentions the imminent danger
and threat, etc." He said that if we use the claim of "the well-being of
the public" as an excuse to evacuate the Jewish families, this will be a
dangerous precedent of surrender to Palestinian threats and pressure.
3. QUIET AT THE SITE
The site of the controversy at Ras el-Amud is quiet today. A small Peace
Now demonstration was held there, the participants of which proffered
strong verbal abuse at the new residents. Free bus transportation, every
hour on the hour, has been arranged for visitors who would like to express
solidarity with the new settlers. Knesset Members of the Land of Israel
front held an emergency meeting at the site, in light of the reports of a
possible forced evacuation. The Yesha Council announced that it will do
all it can to frustrate the intention to dismantle the Mt. of Olives presence.
4. MORDECHAI'S ANSWER
Defense Minister Yitzchak Mordechai was asked today by Arutz-7
correspondent Kobi Sela,"Why did you say, before the elections, that the
Likud government would populate Ras el-Amud and other places?" After
denying that he had mentioned Ras el-Amud, he said, "I mentioned Ras
el-Amud, but I also called for the settlement of many areas in Jerusalem,
such as Har Homa, and Maaleh Adumim, and others. I suggest that you look
and see what is going on in those places... I think that we should put our
efforts towards housing many families in certain critical areas, and not
concentrate on housing three families in one building in Ras el-Amud."
5. HIGH MORALE AMONG IDF SOLDIERS IN LEBANON
Apropos the debate about quitting or remaining in Lebanon, a soldier
serving there wrote a letter yesterday to the editor of Maariv, saying: "We
are fighters... Of course death is painful... but there is a war going on.
Hizbullah is a strong army, but we are better. It is a hard war, but we
have won more difficult wars. The morale here is high, and, as everyone
knows, we have had our share of successes. All those who complain about
the supposed 'trap' in which we find ourselves in Lebanon [should simply
be ignored]."
Arutz-7 spoke yesterday with Brig.-Gen. (res.) Rafi Noi, presently serving
as Assistant to the Defense Minister. He said that the above letter is not
surprising, and that it reflects the many discussions that Defense Minister
Mordechai holds daily with tens of soldiers. "Minister Mordechai visits
many army bases," Gen. Noi said, "and this letter is representative of a
large majority of the soldiers with whom he has talked. The soldiers, in
addition to being ready and willing to do what they were trained to and
which they do well, recognize the importance of public support for the
IDF's important mission of protecting the Galilee towns." He said that it
is clear that those who call for a unilateral withdrawal from Lebanon are
simply 'tired.' "But it is equally clear that if our enemies see that all
they have to do is cause us extra casualties in order for us to tire and
want to withdraw, we will not be safe on any front," General Noi said.
6. ILLEGAL FLOORING ON TEMPLE MOUNT
The Chai Vekayam movement turned to the Supreme Court today, regarding the
illegal Arab construction being carried out by the Moslem Waqf on the
Temple Mount. The movement is demanding that the Jerusalem Police and the
Attorney-General take appropriate action to enforce the law. Chai Vekayam
brought as evidence a document signed by the head of the Antiquities
Authority, stating that the Waqf is illegally building a floor on the
southern portion of the Temple Mount.
7. ILLEGAL ARAB CONSTRUCTION GOING OUT OF CONTROL
A report by the security forces, which has been submitted to the Prime
Minister, determines that there has been a significant increase in the
amount and type of Palestinian activity in eastern Jerusalem. The PA is
attempting to undermine Israeli control over the eastern section of the
city by instilling fear and unrest. They are also engaged in the purchase
of properties with currency from Arab countries, most notably Morocco and
the Persian Gulf states. Interior Ministry officials told the authors of
the report that Israel is on the verge of losing all control of the present
status of illegal construction in the Arab sector in Jerusalem.
8. PALESTINIAN ANTI-SEMITISM
A recent article by Nadav Ha'etzni in Maariv documents blatant examples of
Palestinian anti-Semitism that liken Zionism to Naziism. On September 4,
for example, the official mouthpiece of the Palestinian Authority -
Al-Hayat Al-Jadeedah - featured a piece by Nabil Salaam, which concluded:
"Since its establishment, the racist Zionist entity has been implementing
various forms of terrorism on a daily basis which are a repetition of the
Nazi terror. This proves the shared roots of Nazi and Zionist thought. This
also explains the cooperation between the Jews and the Nazis during World
War II, through which was revealed the forged claims of the Zionists
regarding alleged acts of slaughter perpetrated against the Jews during
the same period."
Commander of the Palestinian Police General Ghazi Jabali reacted with
derision to the arrest warrant and extradition request recently issued
against him by Israel. He said, "This reminds me of Goebbels [Hitler's
propaganda minister], who said 'tell lies and lies, and in the end they
will believe you.' The same is true of the Jews. It is a disgrace that they
are issuing an arrest warrant against me. Apparently they have learned
Goebbels' methods." The extradition request against Jabali was issued by
Justice Minister Tzahi Hanegbi in the wake of Jabali's having ordered his
Palestinian police unit which to kill Jewish residents of Yesha.

In an interview with Palestinian writer Ahsan al-Agha during a "cultural
program" broadcast two weeks ago on Palestinian television, the interviewer
said: "It is well-known that every year the Jews exaggerate what the Nazis
did to them. They claim there were 6 million killed, but precise scientific
research establishes that there were no more than 400,000." Al-Agha, a
teacher in Gaza, replied: "I think we are talking about an investment.
[The Jews] have profited materially, spiritually, politically and
economically from the talk about the Nazi killings. This investment is
favorable to them and they view it as a profitable activity so they inflate
the number of victims all the time. In another ten years, I do not know
what number they will reach. Last year, for the first time, a statistic
appeared according to which 1 1/2 million children were killed by the
Nazis. This number was not previously known... If this number was indeed
correct, then someone would certainly have remembered it... In my opinion,
it is an investment, and as you know, when it comes to economics and
investments, the Jews have been very experienced ever since the days of the
Merchant of Venice."
The head of the Palestinian Broadcasting Authority is Nabil Amar, a former
PLO ambassador in Moscow. Amar serves as an adviser to Yasser Arafat and
is a member of the Higher Committee in the talks with Israel. He is also
the publisher and chief editor of the newspaper Al-Hayat Al-Jadeedah, whose
employees receive their salaries directly from the PA budget.
Other examples from the Palestinian press: "[The Jews] are the children of
the colonialist entity, they are nothing more than thieves. They came and
took land which does not belong to them. Therefore, the normalization of
relations with them is impossible.... even if Palestine remains occupied
for hundreds of years... These Zionists are not fit to establish a nation
or to have their own language or even their own religion. They are nothing
more than a hodgepodge."
9. ECLIPSE
Observers in Israel, together with those in most of Europe, Asia, and
Australia, will see a total eclipse of the moon tonight. The partial phase
of the eclipse begins at 7:08 PM (17:08 Universal Time), when the edge of
the moon will first enter the inner portion of the Earth's shadow. The
total eclipse lasts from 8:15 to 9:18 PM, during which time the moon is
entirely within the Earth's shadow. The moon's color will appear
coppery-orange. The eclipse will end at 10:25 PM.

1. NEW RESIDENTS SEEK RESTRAINING ORDER
Dr. Irving Moskowitz, owner of the property at Ras el-Amud, together
with nine of the new residents there, have filed a petition in the
Supreme Court, requesting that the Court issue a restraining order
preventing the police from evacuating them from their home. The ten
petitioners claim that a decision to evict them would be a "extremely
unreasonable" deviation from the government's authority. They further
said that their presence in their new home does not present a danger
to the public, but that their evacuation would signal to Israel's
enemies that violence is worthwhile. The petition will be heard
tomorrow; the presiding court judge will be Hon. Theodore Orr.
Spokesperson Klilah Har-Noi explained that the residents do not have
information leading them to believe that an eviction will be carried
out, but rather submitted the petition in order to protect themselves
legally. "Residents in a house that is to be demolished are given a
chance to appeal the decision, but not those in a house that is to be
evacuated," she explained. She said that her lawyers - Don
Avi-Yitzchak and Eitan Geva - are very confident that they will win
their case, and that therefore they do not fear that a negative ruling
will give the Prime Minister a legal way out of the issue on a silver
platter.
2. DR. MOSKOWITZ: THE PM WANTS US HERE
Dr. Moskowitz did not wish to speak with reporters today, but Arutz-7
correspondent Kobi Sela managed to exchange a few words with him. Dr.
Moskowitz said, "It is clear that we have come back to our home. This
is our home, this is our house. All Jews want to come back to Har
HaZeitim (Mt. of Olives), to live here, and that's what we will do...
I don't know what you mean by compromise, we came here to live, we're
not political. We want to live in Har Hazeitim, in the Jewish
neighborhood. We have the right to do it, as the property is owned by
Jews, and there is nothing political to discuss." He added
afterwards, "I want to say one thing more: I'm sure that the Prime
Minister wants us to be here, I'm positive about this, because I know
him. And [our being here] will give him strength."
Kobi Sela further reported that the original Arab owner of the home
left not only the furnishings in the house, but also a mini-carpentry
shop and a mini-metal-works shop. Sela said that the many people who
have come to help have put these to very good use in arranging living
quarters for the three families, as well as offices and a synagogue.
3. STATUS QUO CONTINUES
Talk of a compromise solution for the families in the new Mt. of
Olives "community" Maaleh HaZeitim has so far proven to be premature.
The residents said this morning that the discussions that took place
all through the night did not deal with a compromise. A solution that
had been mentioned is that the families would be replaced by ten
Yeshiva students, and families would return at a future date to be
decided in coordination with the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister,
according to this plan, would cease his efforts to find a legal way to
evict them. Hundreds of supporters, including former Chief Rabbi
Avraham Shapira, Rabbi Chaim Drukman, and Knesset Members, visited
there today. Knesset Member Abdel Malek Dahamsha (Arab Democratic
Party) entered the building, but was escorted outside by policemen
after he began to berate the residents. Two Arabs were arrested for
throwing stones.
4. POLICE DO NOT EXPECT VIOLENCE
A difference of opinion between the police and the General Security
Service has arisen as to the security ramifications of the Jewish
presence at Ras el-Amud. The official police line is that there will
not be an escalation in tensions if Jews move in to the area, while
the GSS fears an outbreak of Arab riots. Prime Minister Netanyahu
tends now to accept the police estimation, and has indicated that he
will not evacuate the residents by force. He has cancelled his trip
to Europe for the meanwhile, although he may still visit Austria on
Sunday.
5. LEVY-SHAATH MEETING
Foreign Minister David Levy is scheduled to meet today or tomorrow
with Palestinian Authority senior figure Nebil Shaath. The two will
discuss the Jewish presence at Ras el-Amud, and the upcoming meeting
between Israeli and PA delegations in Washington next week.
6. PRIVATIZATION PAYS
Israel's income from the privatization of government companies this
year will reach a record sum of nine billion shekels. The director of
the Government Companies' Authority, Tzippy Livni, estimates that
income during the coming year will be along the same scale. Companies
targeted to be privatized include Bezeq, Zim, and El Al Israel
Airlines. Ms. Livni said that the government is interested in
privatizing the Israel Electric Company, but that this would be done
in stages.
7. FIVE PALESTINIAN POLICE ARRESTED
An IDF patrol arrested five uniformed Palestinian policemen early this
afternoon on the Dolev-Beit El route. Radio equipment was found in
their car. The Oslo accords stipulate that the Palestinian police are
not to travel on that route.
8. 62% FEEL WEIZMANN WAS WRONG
A clear majority of Israelis - 62% - feel that President Weizmann was
wrong in advising U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright to
pressure Prime Minister Netanyahu, according to a Geocartographic
Institute poll. Some 60% of the 501 persons polled felt that there
should be some measure of public criticism of the President for his
remarks.
9. MORE JEWISH PROPERTY IN CITY OF DAVID
A Jerusalem court ruled today that the Elad Association - representing
the Jewish residents of Ir David (Silwan), a few hundred meters south
of the Temple Mount - is the lawful owner of yet another property in
Ir David. Evyatar Cohen of Elad (an acronym for the Hebrew words
meaning 'To the City of David") told Arutz-7 today that the group's
next step is to actualize its ownership over the property, situated
very close to the parking lot below Dung Gate. Elad members have
bought a number of properties in the area over the past fifteen years.
Arutz-7 correspondent Yehoshua Mor-Yosef asked Cohen, "Do you think
that the Ras el-Amud residents played into the hands of their
opponents by inviting the press and media?" Cohen answered, "I can't
speak for them, but I can say that for Jews to live on Mt. of Olives
is the most natural and logical thing in the world. Instead of us
always looking for ways to blame ourselves and find what's wrong with
this or that action, we should concentrate on the Arab threats against
us."
