TODAY'S HEADLINES: 1. LARGE-SCALE TERRORIST ATTACK AVERTED 2. FAMILIES MOVE OUT, STUDENTS MOVE IN 3. HEVRON VIOLENCE ACTS UP 4. RUSSIAN DENIES AIDING IRAN 5. LEADERS COME, LEADERS GO 6. CHIEF RABBINATE NEWS
1. LARGE-SCALE TERRORIST ATTACK AVERTED It was revealed last night that the Israeli General Security Service arrested a Hamas terrorist gang last month that had planned to carry out a bombing in the Malha Mall in Jerusalem. The gang had also planned to kidnap Jerusalem Mayor Olmert and/or another public figure, whose name is not being permitted for publication. The terrorists were arrested only one day before the intended attack, after they had carried out careful advance planning. Security at the mall has since been re-enforced.
Two of the gang members have already been indicted. The gang was responsible for a previous terror attack in Tel Aviv, in which 14 people were injured, and were connected to the Tsurif terrorist gang as well.
2. FAMILIES MOVE OUT, STUDENTS MOVE IN The three families in the Mt. of Olives building owned by Dr. Irving Moskowitz left last night, and have been replaced by ten yeshiva students, as stipulated in the compromise reached yesterday. The Peace Now encampment is still there, the occupants of which said that they will not leave until the last of the Jewish settlers have gone. Representatives of the two groups met today, in an atmosphere described as "good."
Some sharp Arab reactions have been heard at the compromise reached regarding the Jewish presence there. Leading Moslem leader Sheikh Abdullah Nimar Darwish wrote in a prominent Palestinian paper today that Dr. Irving Moskowitz is "an extremist Nazi." Yasser Abed Rabbo, responsible for the Information Portfolio in the Palestinian Authority, called today for the Palestinians to object to the Jewish presence on Mt. of Olives "with all the means at their disposal." Today's Moslem prayers in the Al Aksa mosque passed quietly, and the 10,000 worshippers dispersed quietly. Police are still stationed near the Ras el-Amud building, as a precautionary measure against Arab violence there.
3. HEVRON VIOLENCE ACTS UP Several incidents of Arabs throwing rocks were registered in Hevron today, and three explosives were thrown this morning at IDF soldiers. The soldiers were not hurt, and Hevron is now quiet.
4. RUSSIAN DENIES AIDING IRAN Russian Ambassador to Israel Michael Bogdanov denies Israeli claims that Russia is aiding Iran in the development of nuclear weapons. In a meeting with Absorption Minister Yuli Edelstein, Bogdanov said that the only nuclear help proffered by Russia to Iran concerns the construction of a nuclear reactor in Bushir, that will be used for electricity. He said that if Israel has specific information about Russian nuclear scientists employed in Iran, it should transmit it to the authorities in Moscow, who will "deal with the issue with all seriousness."
5. LEADERS COME, LEADERS GO Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu will depart on Sunday for a two-day visit to Austria. He was supposed to have visited Romania and Hungary beforehand, but he remained here in order to deal with the Mt. of Olives issue. The Prime Minister is scheduled to visit the United States and Great Britain next month. The President of the Czech Republic will visit the Middle East beginning today, and will spend five days in Israel next week.
6. CHIEF RABBINATE NEWS Chief Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau received an unusual request yesterday during a visit to Hevron. Jewish leaders there asked the Chief Rabbi if the responsibility for the Machpelah Cave could be transferred from the Defense Ministry to the Chief Rabbinate. They mentioned as a precedent the Moslem Waqf's control of Islamic holy sites, such as the Dome of the Rock and environs... Rishon Letzion Rabbi Eliyahu Bakshi-Doron recommended revoking the burial licenses from burial societies that employ sanctions in their struggle to improve their employment conditions. The burial society in Acre this week prevented funerals from taking place, because of their ongoing dispute with the municipality (which has since been solved)... The Chief Rabbinate is working to find a Halakhic solution for the problem of storing the milk that will be produced during the upcoming three-day Rosh HaShanah/Shabbat holiday. Chief Rabbi Lau said that reports that the Rabbinate had decided that the five million liters of milk must be thrown away were not true, and that those who spread such reports were spreading "disinformation." ____________________________________________________________ Arutz-Sheva Educational Radio is a project of Bet-El Yeshiva Center Institutions.
