TODAY'S HEADLINES:
  1. ALBRIGHT THREATENED TO WALK OUT ON ARAFAT
  2. GAS MASK DISTRIBUTION CONTINUES

1. ALBRIGHT THREATENED TO WALK OUT ON ARAFAT
Arutz-7 correspondent Haggai Huberman reports that the meeting last week
between U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and Yasser Arafat was
"difficult," according to Palestinian sources. Albright told Arafat
clearly that the Palestinian support for Iraq must cease. Arafat offered
to serve as a mediator between the U.S. and Iraq, an offer which Albright
politely turned down. Huberman says that even Palestinian sources agree
that voices were raised when Albright strongly insisted that Arafat do his
share in fighting terror; she threatened to leave the room at one point,
claiming that Arafat did not understand what she was referring to.
(Yesterday, however, Albright was more "even-handed," saying that neither
Netanyahu nor Arafat is doing enough to advance the peace process.) The
Palestinians say that as a result of the meeting, Arafat decided to send
his recent letter of support to Iraq.

In other Albright news, she told the United States Senate Foreign Relations
Committee yesterday that there is no connection between the difficulties in
the Oslo process and those of the U.S. in formulating a broad coalition
against Saddam Hussein. She said that some Arab countries wrongly assume
such a connection. Secretary Albright also reiterated that Israel has the
right to protect itself in case it is attacked.

2. GAS MASK DISTRIBUTION CONTINUES
The Foreign Ministry has opened a gas mask distribution center for members
of the diplomatic corps in Israel and their families. The station is in
Kfar Shmaryahu, and some 1500 masks have so far been distributed. The
Ministry announced to the various embassies that the government has
established a committee to formulate the procedures for distributing gas
masks to foreign workers in the country. Israeli embassies in Europe have
succeeded in acquiring some 300,000 gas masks to cover the shortage that
was recently discovered.
