NETANYAHU REJECTS AMERICAN IMPOSITION 2. SHARON ENGAGED IN INTENSIVE EFFORTS 1. NETANYAHU REJECTS AMERICAN IMPOSITION "Not since the founding of the State of Israel has it happened that a foreign element attempted to force a peace plan upon the Israelis and Arabs," said Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu last night. Speaking to an American Jewish group, he thus rejected reports that the U.S. may try to impose its own withdrawal plan upon the Israelis. The Prime Minister said that only Israel can decide on its security arrangements, as its citizens are the ones who will have to live with the results. 2. SHARON ENGAGED IN INTENSIVE EFFORTS Minister of Infrastructures Ariel Sharon continues his attempts, together with senior figures in the Palestinian Authority, to formulate a plan for the next withdrawal from Yesha (Judea and Samaria). He is working with the backing of Prime Minister Netanyahu. Arutz-7 has learned that the negotiations are intensive, and that Sharon refuses to speak publicly about them until Arafat agrees in principle to the plan. According to the plan, Israel will withdraw from extensive areas in Yesha, the Palestinian autonomous areas will be fully contiguous throughout the length of the Shomron, and the PA will receive significant economic aid from Israel. At the same time, the network of bypass roads will be considerably expanded, such that no Jewish community will be uprooted. Arutz-7's Knesset correspondent Hizki Zisman reports that the MKs of the Land of Israel front are very apprehensive about the plan, and claim that Sharon has become the most left-wing member of the government. In response, Sharon's spokesman Raanan Gissin told Arutz-7 today that Sharon's primary interest in his talks with the Palestinians is to preserve the security of the State of Israel, as well as that of the Jewish communities in Yesha and their residents. Speaking to a delegation of the Conference of Presidents of American Jewish Organizations, Sharon said, "Although the dispute over whether the withdrawal should be from 9% or 10% of Yesha appears to be trite, the fact is that every single percentage is very important. Israel can cede 6% without harming its security, 9% is a danger, and 11% is a grave danger. Every concession will cost us greatly in the long range." Sharon said, however, that territorial contiguity for the Palestinian Authority need not necessarily be dangerous for Israel. Other points raised by Ariel Sharon: * Israel need not lead the campaign against Russian aid to Iran for the development of non-conventional weapons. * The Palestinians are creating a "crisis climate" by not progressing in the committee talks with Israel, hoping for American pressure on Israel. America should be involved in the process, but cannot create pressure. Israel must be responsible for its own security. Knesset Land of Israel front leader MK Michael Kleiner met with Prime Minister Netanyahu last night, and now feels that Netanyahu is determined to carry out a large-scale withdrawal from Yesha, in accordance with Ariel Sharon's plan. No date has been set for the resumption of construction on Har Homa either, said Kleiner. The Land of Israel MKs are again threatening not to vote with the coalition on important Knesset votes, starting next week. ____________________________________________________________ Arutz-7 Educational Radio is a project of Bet-El Yeshiva Center Institutions.
