      Mrs. Lucinda Chumbler stated the following information on 7 May 1901, that she was the widow of William Warren Chumbler, b. 1820, in Pickens County, South Carolina and died 10 September 1886, in Hall County, Georgia, and that he served in the Confederate Army, Co. B, 2nd SC Rifles. Lucinda stated her maiden name was HEAD, and she was born 1822 in Pickens County, South Carolina, and that she married William Warren Chumbler in Pickens County, South Carolina. Three sworn testimonies were presented as proof Lucinda Head Chumbler was the widow of William Warren Chumbler:

      (1) Tollie Dean swore that she was the sister of William Warren Chumbler and knew that Lucinda Head married her brother, William Warren Chumbler. Tollie Dean was living in Oconee County, South Carolina.

OLD UNITY BAPTIST CHURCH CEMETERY: Located about 1/2 mile beyond creek on hilltop, in woods, behind last house on frontage road off I-26 and road 50 near Woodruff. (Known as a ghost cemetery, this is not on any current maps of the area. It is on private land, but owners are cordial and permission is easily obtained. After crossing a shallow creek and climbing the rise, the cemetery becomes visible through the trees. It is overgrown and uncared for; and many graves are no longer marked. Ask at the Unity Baptist Church in Woodruff for information. The "new" cemetery is on the highway across from the present church and has graves that are quite old.) These stones were first copied by Lynwood D. Jordan, Sr 1967; confirmed by Carol McClintock, 1993.

  1. Joseph (Chumley) Chumney . On November 26, 1796, Joseph witnessed a land sale in Laurens County, SC (see Deed Book "F" by Nash, pg 143). Joseph had jury duty in Davidson County, TN in 1807 and 1811 and was listed in the Davidson County, TN militia. Joseph volunteered for 1 year to go as a farrier under John Coffee on the "Natchez Expedition" led by Andrew Jackson. Joseph bought 75 acres in Williamson and Maury Counties, TN on October 17, 1819 and sold them on Sept 27, 1823. Joseph's first wife died about 1835-1836. Joseph married Isabella on July 28, 1836. Joseph moved to Maury County, TN and then to Henry County, TN. OLD JOHN CHUMLEY CEMETERY


The following is from the Caucasian Cemeteries of San Augustine County, Texas, contributed in 1981 by Mrs. Eugenia (Chumley) Westbrook (now deceased), Earl Chumley, and Virginia (Dwire) Adams. Early Settler data was contributed by Mrs. J.M. (Mcxie Whitten) Martin and Mars. Abbie (Sallie Richards) Whitton. It is located on page 209.

LOCATION: Go 2 7/10 miles from the San Augustine County, Texas courthouse on Farm Road #353 (Whit Rock Road). The cemetery is located to the right about 300 ft off the highway in a small clump of trees and bushes. It is enclosed with a fence.

EARLY SETTLER: John Chumley was born about 1775 in Virginia. He moved to Arkansas before emigrating to Texas in 1824, settling in January of 1838 in San Augustine County, Texas. He married Delilah Russell who was born about 1790 in North Carolina. They had six children named Hannah, Thomas C (married Nancy Willingham), Alex B., Gardner (married Lucinda Bullock), Drewry (married Martha Jane Hale) and Armstead. John, Thomas and Armstead Chumley all enlisted in the Company of Captain Thomas S. McFarland on the 4th of July, 1836. John Chumley died about 1859. His wife, Delilah Russell, preceeded him in death some years earlier. She died between 1850-1859. Both were buried near their home site. In 1861, Alex Chumley, the son of John and Delilah Chumley, was killed and was buried by his parents. There are only three graves at this cemetery and they do not have monuments.

CHUMLEY CEMETERY, SAN AUGUSTINE, TEXAS

The following is from the Caucasian Cemeteries of San Augustine County, Texas, contributed in 1981 by Mrs. Jimmy S. (Louise Pickard) Lyons, updated index 1991 by Mrs. Louise Pickard Lyons, Mrs. Bernice Pickard Blue and Mrs. Ernest (Eleanor Pickard) Mills. It appears on pages 204 and 205.

LOCATION: Three miles east of San Augustine on State Highway #21, turn north on the first dirt road, go about 1 1/2 miles. San Augustine, Texas is in East Texas close to the Sabine River.

HISTORY: Tom Chumley donated the land for this cemetery. There are 51 monuments in the Chumley cemetery. The number of the unmarked graves cannot be determined. In the Southwest corner especially, there are a large number of unmarked graves. There are 20 people known to be buried in the Chumley cemetery that do not have a monument.

A HISTORY OF LYNN COUNTY, TEXAS


Jacob (Jake) Chumley came to Lynn County in 1908. He worked as a cowboy on the Singleton, Frost and Slaughter ranches. He later lived in the Draw area. A native of Milam County, J.E. Chumley married Drura Morrow in 1923 at Draw. Later, they farmed northeast of Redwine then moved to Berry Flat. By 1938, the Chumley's lived in Seagraves. Mr. Chumley died on May 14, 1959 when struck by a car at Seagraves. The couple had three sons, Homer Chumley, J.H. Chumley and Hugh Chumley and three daughters, Mrs. Christine Woodfin, Mrs. Nettie Sword and Mrs. Jimmie Nell McDaniel.
