Step #11a: Searching for the Afikomen
After the Passover meal is eaten, the afikomen (the larger piece of the middle piece of matzah that was broken and hidden in a napkin) is searched, found and redeemed.
Once the afikomen is found, it is a custom for the child to barter with the father to determine the value of the afikomen. Once the price is agreed upon, the father will give a down payment on the agreed price. This down payment is known as the “promise of the father”.
