- Harold E. Dayton (E-mail: berhar@tstar.net) . Harold Dayton is researching info on William Charles (Buck) Chumney. William Charles (Buck)Chumney was born November 1, 1829 in VA and died 3 Sept. 1911 in Wellington, TX. Some of the family said once that they thought that he was born in the part of VA that became West Virginia after the Civil War. My uncle told me once that when he was young Buck came to visit them. That was about 1907 or 1908. He said that it was his job to look and see after him. Buck told him that he left VA after he had gotten into a duel. He might have been telling his grandson a tall tale. I know that his youngest son in the late 1870's or early 1880's had to leave home in the middle of the night and was never heard from again. They had trouble with one of their neighbor's cows getting into their field. They had warned him about his stock. This son took a gun and killed cows and left the country ahead of the law. We do not know who Buck married or where. I find conflicting the last name of his wife. I think that he married in Blanco County, TX. but the courthouse and all of the records burned. Some of the family thinks that he married in VA. I had a hard time finding Civil War records. He was in Hays Co., TX at the beginning of the Civil War and entered the Confederate Army and returned after the war. My grandmother Sarah Elizabeth (Betty) Chumney Hancock was born August 3, 1866 in Hays Co., TX. His oldest child was born in 1862. He lived around the area until about 1900 when he went to visit his brother "Enicke" Chumney in Wichita County, TX in Electra area. I found where Enicke Chumney was one of the earliest in the Electra area but was unable to find him on the 1880 or 1900 census. Buck's youngest daughter Lucy married George B. Ancell there in 1900.

He was not to serve long, for in a short
time he was taken sick with the measles, which settled in his hip and rendered him a cripple for some eight or ten years. After the war he lived at Warsaw, Benton county, Missouri, for a time, and from there went to Barry county, and from there to Verona. He married during the war, Mary E. Goodman.

Otto Alonzo Chumbley attended the public school until he was about thirteen years of age, when he went to work in the Verona flouring mill, and worked there until it burned down. He then farmed for two years at home. After that he moved to Republic, and was employed in the mill at that place, owned at the time by the R. C. Stone Milling company. Copy of a letter written by the soldier: Ballard Chumbly, 1846, Oct 17
My Dear Wife: I write to inform that I am well at present, though I have been sick for sometime and had to stay behind the regiment and did not get to it until yesterday and as some of the men from Capt. Evans Company have been discharged and started home before I got with the Regiment. They will likely give some unfavorable account of me and I hasten to inform you otherwise. I have not drawn any money but my clothing wages though I have plenty of money and plenty of clothes. General Taylor had a battle at Montery -- it commenced on 23rd., Sept and ended the 25th. We had about 500 killed and wounded. Some reports say from 1000 to 1500 and about as many men because we had 6000 men and the Mexican 120000 - The two Generals entered into a muster for eight weeks, which will terminate about two next month. I am still going on in as good spirits as though peace was made and I will return as soon as my term is out. None have died in the Claiborne Blues. Capt Evans and eight others took shipping at Port Lavaca for Camrgo, They being unable to travel we have started this morning to the same place 40 miles between water. Each man has a canteen or
Mexican gourd in which they can carry water sufficient to supply themselves, consequently we will not suffer. Tell Wm Carroll to gather the crop and take good care of it and not sell it, and that he shall be well paid for attending to it. You must keep the children going to school, till I come home. Green B. Cadle is well, He come to this place by water from Little Rock. Give my respects to all inquiring friends, Write to me and put the following directions on the letter and I will get in 30 or 40 days. Ballard Chumbley A volunteer in Capt., Evans Company - Claiborne Blues, Tennessee Regiment, cavalry, Pint Isabella, By express mail. I remain your affectionate husband, to Delina Chumbly, signed Ballard Chumbley. Let me know whether you get the money I sent by N. T. Anderson.

Evans Co., and that he was personally acquainted with him at the time he entered service and that there was no complaint from said soldier Chumbley until we got in Texas, tho he was taken with fever and was left behind and there was several kinds of fever in our company, from the change of climate and the very hot days and cool nights and bad weather and exposure to which the service
subjected him was the consequence of said fever.

Through the Oklahoma Historical Society in an "Indian Pioneer History" Vol. 99, page 170 is an interview dated January 14, 1936 with Martha Ann Thomas Andrews who lived at 400 North Macom Street, El Reno, Oklahoma. It says:
Martha Ann Thomas Andrews was born in Pulaski County, Kentucky on May 21, 1873, the daughter of James Chumbley and Lucille Fry Chumbley. When she was three years of age, her parents moved to Russell County, Kentucky, a distance of about 30 miles. She remembers very distinctly this trip as her father owned a very stubborn mule that he wanted to take along. The only member of the family that could ride him was her father and as the mule would not lead when tied to the wagon, the only thing was for her father to ride the mule. As they made ready to start, Martha Ann set up to cry to ride with her father on the mule. At last her wish was granted, so for this reason, she remembers the trip very well. Her first school was built of logs. The roof was made of branches and sod placed over this. The logs were chinked with mud. A long broad board rested on the pegs inserted in the logs along two sides of the room and this formed a steep desk ... It was September 8, 1890 that she married William Franklin Thomas and soon after their marriage this family drifted to Kansas and in the spring of 1892, the Thomas family decided to try their luck in the new country of Oklahoma ... Her husband mad the run at the Cheyenne and Arapaho Opening on April 19, 1992 and secured a claim nine miles south of the town of Hinton. When their wagon was halted, her husband took out a spade and began to construct a home ... Mrs. Thomas cooked the family meals by campfire and the group slept in the wagon until the house was completed ... One of the rules of homesteading was that a fee of about 14 dollars was charged for each 160 acres ...It was required that a homesteader was required to make this his permanent residence for five years ... Mr and Mrs Thomas reared their family of five boys and four girls on their claim. In the summer of 1936, Mr. Thomas passed away. In March 1937, Mrs. Thomas sold her share in the old homestead and moved to El Reno, Oklahoma. She later married Mr. Andrews in the fall of 1937.

William Young is the son of Baxter Chumley who is reported to have migrated to the United States from England in the late 1700's. I, Eddie Chumney, received the following e-mail from James Farmer about Chumley family history. In his e-mail note to me, he says the following. The research on our family was done by relatives living in California and Oklahoma. It came to me by way of a cousin that lives nearby. So, I'll write it the way it's given here.
Our family in this country started out this way. Three brothers, the youngest in their family, who would not inherit any of the family's Iron Works in England came to this country in the late 1700's (1785-1790). They initially settled in Giles County, Virginia but later separated. George Chumley settled in Pennsylvania. Robert Chumley went to Tennessee and settled in Gap Creek at the foot of the southside of the Cumberland Mountains. Baxter Chumley, called Buck, the other brother and our ancestors settled in the Greenville District in South Carolina. A few years after they moved to the United States, the brother left in England died. So, the three brothers living in the United States pooled their money together and bought passage for the oldest brother, George, to return to England to liquidate the estate then share equally with his younter brothers. Robert and Buck met him in Charleston, South Carolina but he refused to recognize them. Baxter Chumley (we do not know what port that he sailed from) but it is believed that he entered this country at Charleston, South Carolina or his date of birth or death) married Charlotte Gilbreath and they had 5 children. We believe that Baxter and Charlotte died in South Carolina. Their 5 children were:
- George K Chumley Born 1798. Died October 4, 1870, Spartanburg, South Carolina
- Ollie (daughter) Chumley Born 1799. Married a Dr. Trail.
- Mariah Chumley Married Bill Wofford
- William Young Chumley. Born August 23, 1815, Spartanburg, South Carolina. Died April 25, 1898, Dekalb County, Alabama.
- John W Chumley Born around 1823.
- Richard/Richmond E Chumley Born April 11, 1833.
NOTE: Some of the papers I received indicate there could have been as many as 10 children according to the census records beginning in 1810 through 1840. A search of the Spartanburg, South Carolina cemetary survey revealed that George Chumley died on October 4, 1870 at the age of 72. Two of his daughters are buried in the same cemetary. Daughter of George K & S.E. Chumley, born March 24, 1865 and died January 24, 1886. Bertha, daughter of George K & S.E. Chumley died, October 17, 1882. There was no record of the burial place for Baxter or Charlotte. The three youngest sons, William Young, John W and R.E. moved to Alabama around 1840. All three are buried at Providence Hill Missionary Baptist Church cemetary in Dekalb County, Alabama.
James Farmer lives about 10 miles from Dekalb County, Alabama. His address is: James Farmer, 507 8th Ave, S.W., Attalla, Alabama 35954.

JOHN CHUMLEY OF SAN AUGUSTINE COUNTY, TEXAS
John Chumley migrated to Texas through Kentucky and Missouri and landed on the Red River at Pecan Point in January 1815. The document that Jo Collier has says that John Chumley came to Texas from Missouri. He was on his way to Texas during the battle of New Orleans. He crossed the Red River and settled at Pecan Point in the year 1815. Some of the persons who came at the same time were Peter Young Willoby (?), Pool, single men Martin Varner, John Jones, David McCoy, Sherman, Issac Jackson and Chandler. They remained there several years. (Papers Concerning Robertson's Colony in Texas compiled and edited by Malcolm D. McClean, Vol. VII and VIII.)
In 1818, John Chumley was located on a tract of land north of the Red River between Clear Creek and Garland Creek in what was called Old Miller County, The Territory of Arkansas. In the year 1821 a petition
was signed by many settlers and sent to the United States Government asking that their lands not be given to the Choctaw Nation of Indians for settlement. John Chumley and David McCoy, who had married John
Chumley's daughter Gincy, were among those who signed of this petition. He then purchased land located South of the Red River and a little Southeast of the town of Jonesborough from Adam Lawrence in the year
1822. He already had settled on and claimed title to a contiguous tract of land. In 1825 his name appeared on another petition to the government regarding settlement of lands Miller County, Territory of Arkansas. ("The Territorial Papers of the United States, The Territory of Arkansas" , compiled and edited by Clarence Edwin Carter - Vol. XIX, 1819-1825 and Vol. XX, 1825-1829). Also, (" Six Months from Tennessee" by Skipper Steely.)
Jo Collier has a copy of an affidavit signed by W. C. Poole stating that John Chumley and David McCoy came to Texas with his father arriving at Pecan Point on the Red River during the battle of New Orleans. John Chumley had a family. David McCoy was single. David McCoy got a land grant in Texas. They also signed petitions in 1822 and 1825 regarding the government moving the Chowtaw Indians into lands they had cleared and settled in Old Miller County, Arkansas. Later, John Chumley bought land below the Red River and then moved south into Nacogdoches area finally settling in San Augustine County. There is a Chumley springs and a Chumley cemetery in San Augustine County, Texas.
John Chumley migrated down below the Red River by at least 1825 and owned land near old Jonesboro Trading Post. According to a land survey done for John Chumley on April 30, 1830, he was in San Augustine County, Texas. He filed for an original land grant for this acreage and was granted the land by the State of Texas on February 1, 1838. There was not enough land in this tract to satisfy original settlers rights to land grants and John Chumley was granted another league of land on the Little Brazos River (located in Robertsons Colony lands) and later one (1) league of land in what is presently known as Fisher County, Texas. It is not believed that John Chumley ever lived on either of the latter two land grants. He eventually made his way to San Augustine County, Texas where he died on February 14, 1859.
Jo Collier believes that her John Chumley married Elizabeth Mayes. In the marriage between John Chumley and Elizabeth Mays, Obadiah Hendrick is listed as surety for the marriage. John Chumley and Obadiah Hendrick were in Kentucky together. Later Obadiah Hendrick and Drury Mayes (another surety to the marriage) went to Texas. Initially, Obadiah Hendrick went to Georgia, Kentucky and then to Texas settling in San Augustine county. Drury Mayes was in Texas in the mid 1800's. Many of the Mayes children and the Chumley children had the same first names. It is believed that John Chumley and Elizabeth Mayes had two daughters named Gincy/Jincy and Sarah Chumley. Gincy/Jincy Chumley married David McCoy. Sarah Chumley married Thomas Scott. John Chumley had the following descendents:
- John Chumley. John Chumley was born around 1770-1775 in VA and died on February 14, 1859 in San Augustine County, TX. This comes from the family Bible of Lucinda Chumley. He was married three times.

John E. Love - Alexander Chumley Gun Fight
"... by 1859, John E. Love had matured, returned to San Augustine, married Susan V. Wood, the oldest daughter of Reuben Douglas and Patsy (Horton) Wood, and started a family. Still, he had a wild side and had accumulated a lengthy San Augustine court record of illegal gaming and playing at cards. One of his card playing friends was Alexander (Alex) Chumley. Evidently this friendship turned sour in the spring of 1861, when Love and Chumley, a son of John and Delila Chumley, got into a violent argument over a card game. Peace was restored, but the next day, after each man had recruited several relatives to represent his side, the fight resumed in front of the San Augustine courthouse (the courthouse, San Augustine's first, had been completed about five years earlier.) Friends intervened and calm was again restored, but James W. Bullock, Alexander Horton's brother-in-law (representing Love's side) had had too much to drink and fired a shot that wounded Dod Chumley. {{introduces another Chumley, but Dod or Dodd was nickname for someone and I'll have to dig in my notes to find out which one, I think it was Thomas Monroe Chumley, but I'll check to be sure. SS}}. As the crowd scrambled for cover, "...Love and (Alex) Chumley, coming in view of each other, commenced firing." Chumley's second shot shattered Love's right hand and "as he (Love) stooped to cock his pistol with his left hand, holding it between his knees, Chumley fired again, shooting him through the heart." A steady fusillade of gunfire had been in progress as Love went down, and Chumley had taken four shots to his body. When the firing stopped, most pistols out ammunition, "...Chumley
(still mobile) made for his horse about seventy yards distant." Horton Wood, Love's brother-in-law, ran to Love's body where he
grabbed Love's large Bowie knife and raced after the retreating Chumley. Chumley turned and fired, missing Wood but hitting a bystander across the street. Chumley fired a second time but by then "Wood was upon him, and knocking down the pistol with his left hand received the bullet through his thigh, and having caught Chumley by the collar, drove the eight inch blade of the knife down by the collar bone and to the hilt, then twice back of the shoulder blade also to the hilt." Both men fell to the ground and by the time Wood had regained his feet, Chumley was dead. Out of this gun battle, called the Love-Chumley fight, several kinsmen were wounded, some in multiple places, but only two were killed, John E. Love, Sr. and Alexander Chumley - the two who had started the shootout initially. John Chumley, who had died at the age of eighty-four, two years, earlier, didn't have to bear the burden of burying his son, but John G. Love, at age seventy-four, did have to stand on his son's graveside and say goodbye. Shortly after the Civil War, on August 18, 1866, Love died at his home northwest of San Augustine ... The Grand Jury indicted John E. Love for playing at cards in April, 1859. A $200.00 bond was posted by Alexander Chumley as ordered by the Grand Jury indictment for playing cards. Bond was dated June 1859.
The bowie knife that Alexander Chumley was stabbed with is in the museum at the San Jacinto monument which is located on the ship channel in Houston, Harris County, TX. This item of interest was given by Jo Collier (E-mail: jomar@wcc.net) on the Chumbley newsgroup V99 Issue #33.
